Buying land in Japan: what to know
The zoning, the building coverage ratio and the floor area ratio decide what kind of building, and how large, can go on each plot.
Under the Building Standards Act, a building plot generally needs at least 2 m of frontage on a road at least 4 m wide.
Foreign nationals and people living abroad can buy land in Japan. Depending on the area and size, a notification under Japanese law may be required; this is covered in the explanation of important matters before the contract.
